I'm old and I love disasters, I am a collector of disasters and I am living at the correct time in history it seems. I was present at the beginning of the end of our world, or at least when I finally noticed it was occurring. In 1969 I was a member of the Ed Pepper diving group out of Hollywood, Florida. I loved to dive, respected the ocean, an integral part of our web of life, I also became aware of the unrelenting attack and destruction of that essential web.
We can see the progression of that destruction when diving, written in the ocean's depths. We can see it now in the 22 inch oil slick at the bottom of the Gulf, ebbing and flowing, sliding along the bottom as the ocean moves, coating the creatures and the bottom with its toxic poisons. we ignore that reality, we deny it and with denial comes delay, and delay brings an absence of a solution. I used to hope for an awakening of the masses from the fugue state in which people found themselves or in the alternative a quick destruction of we humans so the world could continue to survive, but 50 years later, having watched the passing panoply I realize that was an empty, barren, futile hope. We are still here, still intent on our own self destruction and the destruction of our world... we people continue on our barbaric, systematic inexorable path of the destruction of the world in which we live. We continue to fill our living rooms with toxic feces and try to continue to live in the cesspool of our own making.
As the power and influence of the corporations, financial institutions and gas/oil industry has increased, the debauch of our environment has also increased exponentially over the years and people's ability to ignore and support that progression has also increased. The greedy actively viral sect which calls itself 'republican' or 'right wing' is terrifying in their intransigent support of non-science, pseudoscience, their willingness to sell America's working poor into slavery, to force people to adhere to 'their' belief system (whatever it is) and sell this country to the corporations, financial institutions, oil/gas, and the Koch brothers, to destroy our country and the environment. This sect also now includes our supreme court, with open bribery of judges on that body, who are given goods, monies and services in exchange for their votes on cases before them. Yet given all of those facts, People are expected to follow the laws of this country, because that gives the people in authority the right to control. Our laws are apparently now irrelevant to the rich, the powerful, the judges, the politicians, the corporations and yet if people are convinced they should continue to follow the laws all of 'them' the ruling elite, retain the authority and control. That same republican sect that is now working so diligently to curtail the voting rights of people who are not republican or do not believe as they do, who do not follow their mantra, their god, so that the corrupt supremes can once again appoint the leaders.
There is no point in saying 'I'm not responsible', 'I didn't do it', 'I had no time', 'it was too much trouble, I was busy', because, of course, to be silent is to acquiesce. To stand mute, to not participate in the destruction, to turn one's head and not see, to ignore, is tantamount to furthering the debacle. We are killing ourselves but the pace is not fast enough, our world is also dying. I can only hope that it can survive People. We do not deserve this world. We do not deserve the abundance which we are destroying through our rapacious greed. Our endless preoccupation with electronics in which apparently people are able to lose themselves totally, disconnecting from reality and the world, unthinking, convincing themselves they can live in a sterile world without nature, divorced from the web of life which supports them. They have not yet received the wake-up call, they are on the wrong frequency and it may already be too late. I would have more sympathy if I felt the human race deserved it, which I don't. I am disgusted with my fellow humans, even though I enjoy having my belief constantly reaffirmed of the utter self-absorbed, insane, inane stupidity of the human race.
I wish I held out more hope for our country, our world, our environment, the human race, but frankly, looking back from where I began to notice, as I look around at where we are now, I see where this future is leading and it ain't pretty. Without some huge participation by 'we the People' in short order, we are looking at a 'Mad Max' world soon. It is quite laughable as our country and our world falters and staggers to the finish, to watch people so immersed in playing with their own belly-buttons they don't notice what is happening. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the 'movin' piture show' and it is amusing, as only slap-stick idiotic lunacy can be amusing, with the ending already written, which I won't be around to see.
Don't we all love living in an OLIGARCHY? Oh, oh, no one noticed when we lost our democracy? Well, look up Oligarchy in the dictionary, that's where we are now. How is everyone liking slavery? Think we'll get used to it?
